Not unlike the previous titles that feature Super Mario, the Odyssey‘s goal is to introduce new mechanics into the series while it’s preparing for the new Switch console.

Super Mario Odyssey director Kenta Motokura described a few of those mechanical skills in a youtube video released by the Nintendo’s Japanese Youtube Channel. Before going into details about mechanics, Motokura felt the need to explain the storyline behind Mario’s new adventure.

Bowser will once again kidnap Princess Peach and is plotting to hold a wedding with her. This is, admittedly, not new material or a very surprising one like we had hoped. However, things are said to change once Mario hops on the new hat-shaped flying ship that the developers called the Odyssey, and Mario uses it to travel to many new countries and landscapes.

With his new hat-shaped flying ship Mario visits various very different places that range from a modern metropolis, across desert vastness to blooming fields and monochromatic scenes.

This Super Mario game, much like the last one, allows players to make use of four controller options. The game can be played with a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, Joycon grip, two detached Joy-Cons or with the Joy-Cons attached to the Switch tablet.

If you ask Motokura himself, he would recommend playing with the two detached Joy-Cons as it enables the use of motion controls which is the exciting new mechanics introduced into the game. Not only can Mario jump and run like he could previously do, he can now also use his hat as a weapon of choice. Players can control the direction of the throw, according to Mr Motokura.

In order to better familiarize their players with the new features, Nintendo demonstrated various ways of using the special hat that is called Cappy and is actually alive. He comes from the ‘Hat country’ to help Mario fight against Bowser.

The various uses for Cappy include throwing it on lampposts and hydrants, through garbage bins and bags, circular throw to hit targets and much more. The most interesting characteristic of the hat has to be the fact that it can turn into an aerial platform that Mario can use to reach inaccessible places.
