This is not the first time we are hearing about Elon Musk and his plans for colonizing our solar system. Just last year this billionaire and the SpaceX founder gave an hour-long speech where he presented his plans for transporting humans to Mars and starting a settlement. He has also published a paper recently that he adapted from the mentioned speech, which he titled “Making Humans a Multi-Planetary Species”.
Granted, this paper doesn’t differ that much from the presentation Musk gave last year, but it does provide details and specifics that make it crystal clear that Elon Much is very serious about sending humans to the Red Planet and that this paper is his manifesto.
In the manifesto, Musk is contemplating the issues revolving the creation of a self-sustaining city on Mars which would ultimately allow us to become a true multi-planetary species.
Anyone that decides to read this paper will agree that it is certainly a compelling piece of writing. It goes over specific details and challenges about actually transporting humans to Mars and how much would that realistically cost. He also mentioned a few important events that are still in the making that will be the first serious steps to actually taking us to Mars. The first event would the unmanned payloads that should be landing on Mars in the next two years.
If that wasn’t enough, Elon Musk allocated quite a bit of space in his new paper to the development of the idea of traveling well beyond the scope of Mars, which would allow humans a full access to our Solar System. This alone shows how he is an extremely ambitious man who will actually try to make all of his ideas and projects true.
What is intriguing, besides the entire concept of settling on Mars, is that the manifesto doesn’t really discuss the geographical locations where these proposed settlements would be. Considering all the other details he does mention in this piece of writing, one would think that a ‘detail’ this important would be a vital piece of the paper.
While this is, for now, nothing more than a good movie scenario, it is pretty clear that Elon Musk is ambitious and capable, and is not afraid to show it – keep watching, maybe we do end up on Mars after all.
